Koi Carp

Koi carp are direct decendants of the Common Carp. They are kept for decorative purposes in outdoor ponds and water gardens. Koi Carp were developed from Common carp in the 1820s. They are a very popular fish mainly due to how pretty they are but also due to The Koi carp symbol of love and freindship. The most popular category of Koi is the Gosanke which is a cross with Kohaku, Showa Sanshoka and Taisho Sanshoku Koi Carp.

Carp are known as Koi in Japan. Common Carp are commonly used in aquaculture. They are used as a good starting fish for breeding becuase carp are one of the easiest fish to breed.

The word Koi comes from Japanese Meaning Carp. What we know as Koi in America and UK are reffered to as Nishikigoi in Japan which means Brocaded carp. In Japan the word Koi is a homophone for another word that means love or affection, which is why koi are seen as symbols of love and effection.

There are many varieties of Koi Carp. They are distinguished through colour. . New Koi Varieties are being developed all the time, the Ghost Koi was developed in the 1980s and have become very popular with Koi Keepers in the UK as well as fisheries stocking them into lakes for sport. Ghost Koi are very simple to breed and grow faster then most Koi. Ghost Koi are hybrid of a Ogon Koi (white is best) and a wild carp or common carp. If you breed a Ogon (orange) koi with a mirror carp you get a really great Golden mirror carp with heavy plates, lovely large scales (just a tip).
