An Introduction to Koi Farming
Koi farming is essentially a niche within the production industry, but then by its very nature it has a unique edge of its own. After all koi farming is a business venture where you need to deal with actual living organisms. So it is not possible to forcefully speed up the production process as and when required by the prospects of your business. In fact koi farming is a business where it is the koi fish that will be setting up the pace for your business on your behalf. However, experts in koi farming do point out a few places where you can manage to save upon a little bit of time with your preparations over the normal course in which Mother Nature works.
Koi farming can basically be categorized into two distinctive parts. The first part is where the farmer needs to focus on the farm to ensure fruitful spawning. The second part is where the focus has to be on the processes of spawning, raising the fry, marketing and thereon finally selling the koi fish.
The koi farming procedure that will be described in this article will take for granted three basic assumptions. First, that this is a semi-intensive method; second, the koi farming procedure is carried out in a temperate climate like in the UK; and thirdly the outdoor season for pond growing in this case is from March till September.
The broodstock, the hatchery and the mud pond are the three most important things that the farmer needs to focus on. Try to set the spawning date in early May. Center all the other preparations you need to make for the broodstock on that date which will automatically fall in sync with the requirements of the female koi. The next step is to prepare the hatchery. The hatchery basically consists of a number of independently filtered recirculation systems to reduce the risk of the eggs getting destroyed in case they are placed in one basket only. For the first 2 or 3 weeks, the fry will be staying in the hatchery itself. Moreover the hatchery will also need to have the belt and braces filtration as the organic loads will be incredibly high from the very beginning.
Other than this some of the additional things that you will need to keep an eye on are that the central mesh screens are properly sealed and clean. Prepare the mud pond well and enable it with suitable pump too to ensure full scale circulation of the pond water.
